Happy Thanksgiving!

11/22/2022

Sunday, November 20th, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recent message from our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia.  Intern Minister George Grimm-Howell explored the lessons of the  signature change in nature this time of year.  As the trees drop their leaves, they teach us lessons about letting go and about revealing our truth without shame, even when that truth is crooked or scarred by the storms we have been through.  The trees teach us that each individual is beautiful in their imperfection, but also that we are each part of something greater.  Recent discoveries show that trees communicate and support one another, and this can remind us of those who have supported us and whom we can support.  To let go of the old, to let our true selves be seen, and to live in beloved community --- truly, the trees have much to teach us.

The message is available to view online: https://youtu.be/mgeP9DYgFrQ

Courage and change

11/14/2022

Sunday, November 13, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recent message from our neighbors at First Unitarian Universalist of Springfield via video.  First UU minister and friend of UUFJC Rev. Michelle Scott-Huffman delivered her Halloween message focused on last month's theme of Courage, but the ideas are also tied to this month's theme of Change.  Halloween and All Hallows' Eve have invited us to think about death and fear in ways that are both playful and somber, but too often we try to hold death at arms' length.  We tend to fear change --- and death is the ultimate change --- and our fear can paralyze us or let us avoid engaging with the change we want to create.  Rev. Scott-Huffman invited those of us who can do the work while taking care of ourselves to explore the spiritual growth to be found in making peace with our mortality and thinking deeply about the change we want to leave behind.

Rev. Scott-Huffman's message is available to view online: https://youtu.be/3bdEv0zy3-Q

Community Events this week:

This Thursday, November 17th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "How to Resolve America’s Immigration Crisis."  More than most issues today, debates over immigration are caught up in our image of ourselves as a nation and a people and are influenced by powerful symbols such as the Statue of Liberty or even “the border” that can be manipulated and misunderstood by all parties to the debate. To make any progress toward resolving the conflicting interests at stake in immigration policy, we need to reconsider some basic aspects of this complex and fraught issue.  The Library is honored to host Dr. Peter Skerry, professor of political science at Boston College and a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, for a program that will address these important issues. Skerry is a contributing editor at American Purpose and a member of the editorial board of Society.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Next Sunday, November 20th from 2 to 4 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts an Art Reception: "Damsel in the Press: A Missouri Printmaking Exchange."  Shelly Forbis is a Columbia printmaker who earned a BFA in printmaking from Truman State University. She began hosting printmaking exchanges under the Damsel in the Press mantle in 2012. In the case of exchanges hosted by Damsel in the Press, each artist receives one of every print submitted to the exchange. The original motivation for Damsel in the Press was to keep a means of communication open with other Truman State printmaking alumni. Now the exchange is a means of connecting artists from all over the USA and a few printmakers from overseas. The current display represents Missouri artists from 10 different printmaking exchanges.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

As our month of reflection on Courage draws to a close, I would like to share the following reading from our wider UU community.  Often as UUs we think about having courage to confront forces outside our faith, but we are also human and need to face our flaws and do better.  Sometimes that can take great courage, and this reading calls on us to be thankful for that courage.

Please stay safe, well, and connected!

Laura Gilkey
Administrator, UUFJC

Let Us Give Thanks for the Whistleblowers
By Frances Koziar

Let us give thanks
for the whistleblowers / of our faith:
express our gratitude, as deep and pure
as the underground lakes / of the world.
Let us breathe in their pain / and exhale
our sensitivities, opening / our arms wide enough
for all the worlds / that be.

Let us grieve too, for those
who have been lost. For those
who left / because of the mistakes
of the many. Grieve / for our sisters
and our siblings who went looking / elsewhere
for belonging, not / finding it here.
Let us grieve for our own pain, as oppressions
come between us, as sharp
as broken glass, and as invisible
to those who aren’t / paying attention.

Choosing to leave,
—to heal, to protect yourself--
is sacred, and is something many / of us must do.
But let us give all the more thanks, then
for those / who stay, and those
who come back. Let us give thanks
for the poor people / and indigenous people
and the trans people: for those
who chose to stay / in conversation,
lifting stifled / voices in rooms
of hostility. Let us give thanks
for our whistleblowers, who gave / themselves
for our faith—fools, all of us
for martyring ourselves / for a dream,
for this dream, for congregations
who have hurt us / too many times
to count, for the cracked / and broken path
we tread / that we hope / will lead
to Beloved Community: to that place
we have never seen, and yet still / pursue,
that rainbow / that touches the ocean’s
horizon, a distant gleam / of the acceptance
we have never / found.

Let us give thanks
for those who chose / to be angry
rather than leave, for those
who put their broken hearts / into words,
for those who challenged / our institutions
and our leaders / when they erred
—as we all err.

Let us give thanks for their love,
for without them—without / us--
we would know nothing / of it.

[Source Editor's Note: In this piece the author draws on her experiences of being a whistleblower in UU spaces: of calling out oppression, and working to make UU congregations more inclusive to all kinds of people. Being a whistleblower even in a small way can bring social costs (like being labelled a disturber of the peace, or feeling like you and/or any marginalized groups you belong to aren't wanted in your congregation as you are); however, like all of the difficult caring conversations we must partake in on this path toward Beloved Community and radical inclusion, calling out oppression and working toward a better future is also an act of incredible importance and love.]

Sunday, October 23rd, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recent message from our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia: "Plant Yourself in Rich Soil."  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon talked about how our connections create the "rich soil" for liberation and courage, like the roots of trees intertwining and supporting each other through agitation.

And we do need agitation.  As our month of focus on Courage starts to wind down, I would also like to share these words from our wider UU community:

Do Not Fear Agitation
By Tania Márquez

Do not fear agitation, for agitation is the rhythm of life itself; to be put into motion, to be stirred.
Do not fear the movements that decenter what you always thought permanent.
You carry within the center of your understanding, the compass to show you the way.
Carry with you the love that will hold you, the vision that will guide you, the relationships to all beings and the world that will ground you. Go in peace and in gentle agitation to stir this world to the side of love.

October newsletter: UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2022

Sunday, October 16, 2022:

This morning, Dick Dalton joined us for a message on "The Judging Virus."  This contagion, common in our culture, drives us to judge others as "good" or "bad" and as "better" or "worse" than ourselves.  It takes courage to embrace the truth that we do not have to be better than others to be worthy, and that everyone is more complex than good or bad, better or worse.  But that courage is well worth it.  As Dalton wrote, "Healing/forgiveness comes when we deliberately and consistently substitute a different belief" for these contagious temptations of judgment.

UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2022

Sunday, October 9:

This morning, we continued exploring our monthly theme of Courage with a recorded service from our wider UU Community: Courage, led by Rev. Dr. Natalie Fenimore, from the UU Church of Shelter Rock in New York.  Drawing on examples from Michael Servetus to Rosa Parks and taking inspiration from the recent Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, Rev. Dr. Fenimore reminded us that any act can bring us face-to-face with fear.  Failure is always possible; criticism is often likely.  Courage is not the erasure of fear, but the mastery of fear, listening to its reasonable cautions but moving beyond it when we need to to live into our highest values.  As flawed human beings, we will fail at times, and we will cause hurt sometimes despite our best intentions; facing this truth can be the most fearful task of all, but we must find the courage to forgive, recommit, and move forward.  This is the lesson of Yom Kippur; may our faith community also help us to find this courage.

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/u3Z74FcO1UA

"The Judging Virus," Dick Dalton
The Judging Virus is a meme, an expression of cultural information spread by social intercourse, infecting at least 99.9% of humanity. Superior and inferior thoughts/beliefs with their attendant feelings and actions are experienced by the host and are very contagious. Healing/forgiveness comes when we deliberately and consistently substitute a different belief in its place.

Theme of the month: Courage

10/6/2022

Our October newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2022

Sunday, October 2, 2022:

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflection on Courage.  Rev. Mike explored the courage that is necessary as we face suffering through the ups and downs of life, the courage that can lead us through the low times to something better.

His theme also reminded me of this poetic blessing from our wider UU community:

A Blessing for Risk-Takers and Failures
By Robin Tanner

Today we share in a blessing for losers, risk-takers, all failures far and wide....

Blessed are they who fall in the mud, who jump with gusto and rip the pants, who skin the elbows, and bruise the ego,
for they shall know the sweetness of risk.

Blessed are they who make giant mistakes, whose intentions are good but impact has injured, who know the hot sense of regret and ask for mercy,
for their hearts will know the gift of forgiveness.

Blessed are they who have seen a D or an F or C or any letter less than perfect, who are painfully familiar with the red pen and the labels as "less than,"
for they know the wisdom in the imperfect.

Blessed are they who try again, who dust off, who wash up, who extend the wish for peace, who return to sites of failure, who are dogged in their pursuit,
for they will discover the secret to dreams.

Blessed are they who refuse to listen to the naysayers,
for their hearts will be houses for hope.

Blessed are they who see beyond the surface of another,
for they will be able to delight in the gift of compassion.

Blessed are they who stop running the race to help a fellow traveler, who pick up the fallen, who stop for injured life,
for they shall know the kindness of strangers.

Blessed are they who wildly, boldly abandon winning,
for they shall know the path of justice.

Community Events this week:

This Friday, October 7th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents their monthly First Friday Film: "The Duke."  In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-year-old taxi driver stole Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery's history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government agreed to provide television for free to the elderly. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge--a startling revelation of how a good man set out to change the world and in doing so saved his son and his marriage. British acting legends Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren star in this inspiring film.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Sunday, September 25th, 2022:

This morning, we wrapped up our month of focus on Belonging with our Water Communion, an annual ritual expressing the gathering of our Fellowship community.  Members and friends brought samples of water to add to a communal bowl, water that came from or represented significant places or experiences.  The mixing of the water symbolizes how our various gifts come together, and every year, we save part of the water for the ritual in years to come.  All the waters that were added over the years remain with us.  Everything we contributed together today and everything offered by beloved members and friends in the past remains and helps to build our community of belonging.

The book commemorates Missouri's bicentennial of statehood, and has received much praise from readers and reviewers. Kremer is the author of 10 books dealing with aspects of Missouri history, in particular books on race, education, urban-rural divisions, and the role of government. He taught history at Lincoln University and William Woods University and currently serves as executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri. Belonging, our theme for September

9/19/2022

Note: Next week's Sunday service is our annual Water Communion.  All are invited to bring meaningful samples of water to share in this annual ceremony; symbolic water will also be provided.

Sunday, September 18th, 2022:

This morning, as we continued our month of focus on Belonging, our own Betty Cooper shared a message highlighting the blessings and the call of our belonging to our broader society and world.  Drawing on ideas from actor/producer Jeremy Gilley and author Stephen Pinker, Betty pointed to how the positives of our human nature and our efforts -- the "better angels of our nature," in Pinker's words -- can help us come together, turn from violence toward peace, and better our society.

We also have breaking news: we are planning a Trivia Night fundraiser in October, and we want to hear your ideas!  Everyone is invited to a planning session this Tuesday, September 20th at 6 pm in our building.  See details below or contact our president, Rich Burdge.

Next Sunday, September 25th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Spreading Peace Every Day," Betty Cooper

September 21st is “The International Day of Peace.”  Now our task is to spread “peace” every day. Possibly ideas from Stephen Pinker’s book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, can be helpful. It is a tale of six trends, five inner demons, four better angels, and five historical forces that in the past decreased violence.  I am hopeful that using our “better angels” will decrease violence in our homes, schools and all societal structures.

Later on Monday, September 19th, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Charting Gender Identity Through Language and Social Interaction."  Discussions about gender have taken on a more powerful, visible form over the last five or so years. This relatively swift change has prompted much public concern, debate, and support over the ever-evolving landscape of gender and gender identities in the 21st century. Dr. Mick B. Brewer, assistant professor of communication studies, will explain the ways gender functions as a social, linguistic, and symbolic phenomena in the new millennia. He will discuss a variety of approaches to the study of gender as a communication process, with the hope of providing the audience with conceptual resources to better understand and meaningfully engage with gender as a social, political, and cultural institution.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

September 14th, 2022

9/14/2022

Sunday, September 11th, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recently-recorded service by our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, in which they celebrated the music and legacy of "American bard and prophet" Woody Guthrie.  Through words of poetry and sounds of music that stir heart and body, Guthrie both inspired and celebrated marginalized people and struggles for justice.  Nearly 100 years later, those struggles continue, but Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon called on us not to lose heart and instead to keep singing.  Through music, or through whatever form of "song" arises from our hearts, the struggle itself can bring us together in joy and celebration.  As Rev. Molly put it, we can "keep walking that freedom highway" not only as a means to a destination, but to join in the parade of freedom and love.

Note: our lunch after service on September 18th will be at Fuji Steakhouse for a special celebration of our beloved longtime member and music/art leader Patt Behler's 95th birthday!  See below for details.*

"We, the People, Better Society," Betty Cooper

We, the people, better our society, a fact demonstrated by Jeremy Gilley, British actor and film producer and Stephen Pinker, Harvard researcher and cognitive psychologist.  Briefly Gilley's accomplishment is discussed, as are a few of Pinker’s ideas of how violence lessened.  Also, Pinker believes that less violence continues, when “we, the people, effectively use our “better angels.”
